Breathing Problems – Caring for Seniors


Medical issues that can lead to breathing problems in the elderly can be caused by something as common as colds, allergies, and other sinus problems, heartburn or anemia. More significant causes include but are not limited to: 

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary emphysema
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Heart failure
  • Pneumonia
  • Cancer
  • Neurological disorders, including strokes

Many of our residents are on oxygen which requires a physician’s order.  Oxygen tanks (storage tanks must be secured) Oxygen concentrator.

  • Inhalers.
  • Respond to requests for PRN inhaler immediately.
  • Breathing treatments – Requires Physician order. Resident could be Independent with their treatments or require staff assistance.  See Physician’s Report.
  • Know your resident (diagnosis, Dr. orders, Care plan) and report any changes immediately or call 911 for emergency.
