UTI’s are one of the most frequent hidden infections in seniors, who can experience more severe symptoms than younger people. When it comes to preventing UTI’s, hydration is key. Dehydration can also cause UTI’s. This happens because when there in minimal urination or drinking of water, bacteria builds up. Classic symptoms of an Urinary Tract Infection are burning pain and frequent urination.
Why are seniors susceptible to UTI’s:
- Weakened immune system.
- May have lower fluid intake during the day to avoid embarrassment and inconvenience caused by bladder control issues.
- Diminished ability to care of themselves.
- Reduced cognitive abilities and lower energy levels are issues that cause decreased hygiene.
- Becoming less communicative can be a contributing factor as well.

- Poor motor skills.
- Sometimes even depression.
Preventing UTI’s in the Elderly:

- Better Hygiene – to keep midsection area clean and dry.
- Regularly wear and change loose, breathable cotton underwear that can be cleaned easily.
- A ritual from wiping from front to back when using the bathroom is critical.
